Selections from The World's Religions:

Part One
Part Two
Part Three

Huston Smith

Huston Smith is one of the world's leading figures in the study of the world's religions.  Many readers have commented that he writes about each religion with care and grace, as if he himself were a member of each faith.

Huston Smith, who has served as a professor at several universities, is skilled at distilling the core spiritual themes from the world's various religious paths.  His book, The World's Religions, spends a chapter on each of seven religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.  He also takes care to cover other paths, including "primal religions" of indigenous people.

The World's Religions

The World's Religions (review or buy) features expanded sections on the inner dimensions of these great religions, with fresh emphasis on Tibetan Buddhism, Sufism, and the teachings of Jesus.

As the New York Times wrote in its review, the book is "intelligent, clearly written...[it] reveals the spirit of each faith."

In this excerpt from the book, Huston Smith sets the stage for his exploration by commenting on the various spiritual practices around the world.
